From the bestselling author of The Roanoke Girls comes a new novel with the same incredible atmosphere, strong sense of place and dark heart. The Familiar Dark will blow you away.

In a small town beset by poverty in the Missouri Ozarks two 12-year-old girls are found dead in the park. Their throats have been cut.

Eve Taggert's daughter was one of them. Desperate with grief, she takes it upon herself to find out the truth about what happened to her little girl.

Eve is no stranger to the dark side of life - having been raised by a hard-edged mother whose parenting lessons she tried hard not to mimic. But with her daughter gone, Eve has no reason to stay soft. And she is going to need her mother's cruel brand of strength if she's going to face the truth about her daughter's death.

Amy Engel

Amy was born in Kansas and spent the first few years of her life living in a small commune among the wheat fields.

After high school, Amy attended the University of Kansas where she read English. Immediately upon graduation, she moved to Washington, DC to begin law school at Georgetown University.

Amy returned to Kansas City with her law degree and worked as a criminal defense attorney for ten years. She married a fellow attorney and once they began having children, decided to stay home and split her time between mothering and writing, with the goal to be a published author within ten years.

In 2014, Amy wrote her debut young adult novel, The Book of Ivy. It went on to win the Missouri Gateway Readers Award and the Georgia Peach Book Award. A sequel, The Revolution of Ivy, followed in 2015. In between writing those two books, she began work on The Roanoke Girls, her first adult novel, which was published in 2017. While working on this book, Amy realized she enjoyed exploring the shadowy side of the human experience, and she put that discovery to good use in writing her latest novel, The Familiar Dark.
