Hamish Hamilton, 1950. First edition, first printing. Original purple cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the cloth bright and clean, the contents without inscriptions or stamps. The text block edges are a little tanned with the occasional foxing spot. Complete with the complete original dustwrapper which is clean and bright with only light rubbing and a few tiny nicks to the extremities. Not price-clipped (10s 6d net)
Prefaced by the famous Atlantic Monthly essay of the same name, in which he argues the virtues of the hard-boiled detective novel, this collection mostly drawn from stories he wrote for the pulps demonstrates Chandler's imaginative, entertaining facility with the form.
