About the book

Maria did not know why her father had gone away three years earlier, or where he was. Her mother wouldn't explain properly, and Maria soon learned not to ask questions. But school was just so many boring hours, her mother came home from work tired and ill-tempered, there was so little money...oh, everything was horrid without Daddy. About the Author

Annabel Farjeon

Eve Annabel Farjeon was born in 1919 and was a British ballerina and author.

The daughter of critic Herbert Farjeon and artist Joan Farjeon, Eve began learning ballet aged eleven, and went on to dance with the Vic-Wells Ballet and then the Sadler's Wells Ballet.

As well as a ballerina and writer, Farjeon was also a critic, sometimes writing under the name Sarah Jefferson.
