About the book

From bestselling author and British astronaut Tim Peake, an inspirational human history of space travel, from the Apollo missions to our future forays to Mars. The Right Stuff for a new generation.

As seen in the major TV series Secrets of Our Universe with Tim Peake.

Only 628 people in human history have left Earth. This is their story.

Astronaut Tim Peake traces the lives of the remarkable men and women who have forged the way for humanity beyond Earth, from Yuri Gagarin to Neil Armstrong, from Valentina Tereshkova to Peggy Whitson.

Full of fascinating insight into our greatest pioneers and unsung heroes, and astonishing detail only an astronaut would know, Peake's book is the first of its kind to chronicle the human evolution of space exploration over sixty years, from our first forays to now. In the process, Peake reveals what spaceflight is really like: the wondrous view of Earth, the surreal weightlessness, the extraordinary danger, the surprising humdrum, the unexpected humour, the new-found perspective, the years of training, the psychological pressures, the gruelling physical toll, the thrill of launch and the trepidation of re-entry.

In the next few years, NASA will send the first woman and the first person of colour to step on the lunar surface. What will separate these upcoming moonwalkers from the legendary Apollo crews? Does it still take a derring-do attitude, super-human fitness, intelligence, plus 'the right stuff' - a fabled grace under pressure? And how will astronauts travel even further - to Mars and beyond?

Space: The Human Story reveals all.

About the Author

Tim Peake

Tim is a former Apache pilot, flight instructor, test pilot and current European Space Agency astronaut. In 2015, Tim became the first British ESA astronaut to work on board the International Space Station and to conduct a spacewalk.

A veteran of eighteen years’ military service, Tim has flown over 3,000 hours on multiple aircraft types, graduating top of his class from the prestigious Empire Test Pilot's School. He commanded a platoon of soldiers in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and deployed on operations to Bosnia and Afghanistan.

Following a year-long selection process, Tim was chosen from over 8000 applicants to be one of six new astronauts as part of the European Astronaut Corps. During astronaut training he spent seven days living in a cave and twelve days living underwater.

Tim's six month mission 'Principia' to the ISS inspired a nation, engaging with more than 2 million students as part of a hugely successful outreach programme. Whilst in space, he conducted over 250 scientific experiments, oversaw an emergency spacewalk and also ran the 2016 London marathon.

Tim’s autobiography Limitless, tells the often very amusing story of how a short, ginger lad with a passion for flight and all things outdoors went from Soldier, Pilot, Parent to Astronaut.

Now back on Earth Tim continues to work to promote opportunities for young people as an ambassador for STEM education, The Prince’s Trust and The Scout Association.

He is the best selling author of Hello is this Planet Earth?, Ask an Astronaut and The Astronaut Selection Test Book.
